The "right" way to do the job is remove the valve cover, timing belt, then cam cap. The cam cap has a bunch of allen (hex) and Torx Plus 40 bolts that need removal. Once this is done the plug can be removed.

WebAug 30, 2009 · Whether it can be polished out or not depends on the depth of the scratch. A new seal will probably still seal a slightly smaller diameter as long as it's smooth. I'm guessing the scratch is rough enough that it's just damaging the seal. You probably can pull the cam with the head still on the motor, It won't be easy though.
