On the non- optimality of michell structures
Web1 de jan. de 2003 · A general 2-dimensional Michell framework consists of an orthogonal arrangement of two families of structural members arranged along the layout lines; one ( α) carrying tensile stresses and the other ( β) compressive stresses. The framework layout possesses two defining geometrical properties. WebThe paper discusses the interpretation of Michell’s theory in the context of numerical topology optimization and compares various topology optimization results obtained with …

However, a principal focus of the current research project at URI is the investigation of optimal three-dimensional structures, and this gives rise to the need for a non-trivial Michell solution to act as a test case.
Web1 de mar. de 2001 · In a remarkable paper, Michell (1904) defined the requirements for least-weight structures to support a given set of loads. He showed that for minimum weight, all of the structural elements must be strained, under the action of the external forces, by exactly the same strain magnitude, ε, in either simple tension or pure compression. Weblatter also gives optimality conditions for ‘vanishing’ members (of zero cross-sectional area). In other words, optimal layout theory starts off with a ‘ground structure’ of all potential members, and selects the optimal ones (of non-zero cross-sectional area) out of these.
